My personal gear recommendations

Summer Hiking Gear

  • Garmin Mini InReach: Save $100!! If you're off the grid much, this will serve you well.
  • Nalgene: 50% off all! I know, you're thinking you don't need another one but let me tell you about recent personal revelations
    • The Ultalite Water Bottle is perfect if you like to sleep with a hot bottle at night. It's soft so it molds with your body better while still keeping its form. With the sale, it's only $3.89!!!
    • The Narrow-Mouth Water Bottle means you'll never spill on yourself in the car again—anyone else have that problem drinking out of a wide-mouth bottle?🙈
  • Danner Footwear: 25% off all on REI but 30% off on Backcountry! I love the Mountain 600 waterproof hiking boots! I have the full grain leather version (shop mens here).
  • Altra Lone Peak: 25% off. I've owned a few of the older models of the Lone Peaks which is my go-to for a lighter trail shoe but I haven't test out the newer models.
  • Hiking socks: my favorite Darn Tough merino wool socks are 25% off! Every hiker needs at least one pair of merino wool socks.
  • Pingora day pack: Not a holiday sale but they offer 15% off if you enter your email and it's been my go-to day pack for the last two years so had to toss in a mention (scroll around the page for the discount pop-up offer)
  • Women's hiking leggings: Fjallraven Abisko Tights 30% off. My ride-or-die leggings for hiking, scrambling, and climbing. The reinforced fabric actually holds up, and the updated fit is even better. I own five pairs—no shame. They rarely go more than 30% off, so if you’ve been curious, now's the time!

Backpacking Gear

I've been backpacking for ten years now and have been using the same gear for most of the time so I'm stoked to share some good deals!

  • 25% off all Big Agnes Tents: Most of my 3-season tents are BA and both of these are great for 2-people backpacking tents:
    • The tents are almost the same design with the main difference being the Tiger Wall has 2 doors and the Fly Creek has 1 door. They're both great tents if you're looking for an ultralight backpacking tent and will fit two adults snugly. It's hard for both adults to sit up at the same time in the Fly Creek but Tiger Wall has enough volume so it's just fine. The Fly Creek was my main tent for about 6 years until I broke it beyond repair and replaced it with the Tiger Wall.
    • If you're looking for a 1p tent, I prefer the Fly Creek over the Tiger Wall for one main reason — the way the tent stakes pull out. The Tiger Wall is missing tethers to the tent bathtub section so you can't pull the bottom out to fully extend your space (I had a 2018/ 2019 version I think). If you have specific questions about these tents, shoot me a message! I've spent countless nights in both :)
    • Fly Creek HV UL 1
      • 1-person tent
      • HV = High Volume which does make a big difference on space inside if you get the non-HV version for Fly Creek tents
      • Currently 35% for $240.47 —that's a good deal
    • Fly Creek HV UL 2: 2 lb, 4 oz // $299.96
    • Tiger Wall UL 2: 2 lbs, 8 oz (2.5 lbs) // $359.89
    • Salt Creek SL2: 4 lbs 1 oz // $262
      • 2-person, 3 season, 3 doors. I love this tent when I have someone to share carrying the weight with me. It's much more spacious than the Fly Creek & Tiger Wall (I've fit 3 humans snugly but comfortably) and has an awning which is great if you're spending time hanging out at camp. I call this my mini-mansion backpacking tent.
  • 25% off select Therm-a-rest sleeping pads:
    • NeoAir XTherm has the highest r-value on the market and if you're a cold-sleeper like me, you need this. It is my personal go-to sleeping pad for most trips in the mountains—a warm and insulated back is the most important part of your sleep system.
      • Story time: I've slept in 28ºF at 12k ft with a 3-season pad and a -20º sleeping bag (I wanted to test out new gear I just got)—I was cold all night, despite having an extra warm sleeping bag, because my back stayed cold all night. Live and learn.
      • Shop rectangle version here (my preference as I slip off mummy sleeping pads when I sleep)
      • Shop mummy version here
    • However, on the very toasty summer nights, I use the NeoAir XLite. But remember, if you're backpacking at higher altitude in the mountains, it's a lot cooler up there so I almost always bring my winter pad with me still.
  • Water Filter: Katadyn BeFree 1L is 25% off
    • My go-to since 2018: lightweight, compact, and super reliable. Perfect even for long day hikes with water sources. They just updated the filter this year (I haven’t tested it yet, but I trust it’s solid). Need an OG replacement filter element? Here you go.
    • Storytime: Last fall, I left mine outside my tent in Maroon Bells—and woke up to find it gone. My best guess? Some critter stole it as a chew toy. Yeah, I’m replacing mine too :(
  • Jetboil Minimo Stove: 25% off: I’ve been rocking the same Minimo since 2016—and still love it. Jetboil’s got other stoves on sale, like the lighter Stash, which is worth checking out if weight’s your thing. But honestly? Mine still works perfectly, so I’m sticking with it.
  • Backpack: If you're looking for a beginner-friendly one (not ultraight specific which is all I use now) that provides comfort, the Osprey Aura AG 50 is not on sale but you can apply your 20% off code (ANNIV2025) on REI to to it.The anti-gravity suspension on this pack is amazing and keeps your back more breathable. It's my first and only overnight pack I used before I transitioned to ultralight backpacking.
  • Sleeping bags: my go-to backpacking sleeping bags are not on sale but the one I like to use for car camping (sleeping in the car, on the rooftop tent, or a drive-up campsite at lower elevation) which doubles as a backpacking sleeping bag if you run very toasty is 50% off: Eddie Bauer Flying Squirrel. It's a unique design and not for everyone but for me, it's a good hybrid of a sleeping bag/ quilt/ blanket.
  • 10% off backpacking food: save on dehydrated meals when you buy more—stock up for summer!

Car Camping Gear

  • Yakima Rooftop tent: 24% off. This was my first rooftop tent on my Bronco Sport Badlands and it's super cushy and comfy! I swear it almost feels like you're sleeping on a bed mattress and has so much space—highly recommend this if you're in the market for a rooftop tent. I only swapped mine out for the GFC because I needed one that packs away a lot quicker for alpine starts as I'm always on the move, but honestly it's not as comfortable and I might switch back to the Yakima.
  • Exped Sleeping Pad: If you're looking for a cushy sleeping mat, this one is cushy and 25% off.
  • String lights 40% off. This item is being discontinued but I really like it. Not only does it have different colored string lights you can change to with the click of a button, it has a flashlight so it doubles as a quick lantern and it's solar charged.

Merino Wool Essentials

Merino wool is a game-changer for hiking and workouts—moisture-wicking, odor-resistant, and comfy enough to wear for days (yes, days). I even wear mine for everyday training.

Ridge Merino is offering 20% off sitewide with code "summertime" from May 19–26 and here's what's worth checking out:

  • Ridge Merino Solstice Lightweight Hoodie: lightweight, warm but not too warm, sun shirt (UPF 30)
  • High Neck Midweight Aspect Top: this is my favorite winter baselayer but if you're planning snowy, high alpine trips still, you need this. Or, stock up for next winter.
  • Merino underwear is a must for all physical activity. Learn more about best hiking underwear and why I love these on my best hiking underwear blog post here.
  • Bralette/ crop top: This has become a recent favorite for an easy daily top. I don't love this for working out and when I know I'll sweat profusely, but I like it for light movement and daily wear. While it's categorized as a "bralette", it feels more like a cropped tank top with a built-in bra.

Other Stuff

  • Packraft: This is not on sale, but they have announced a price increase starting June 1st so just throwing it out there if you've ever been curious, now might be a good time to buy one. If you have no idea what packrafting is and want to learn more about how I got started, check out my Intro to Packrafting blog post here. I have the Kokopelli Rogue Lite Packraft, one with the TiZip (preferable) and one without.
  • Rock climbing shoes: La Sportiva TC Pros are 35% off! I have the OG version of these and haven't tried out the updated model but if you're considering it, it's on sale. I like mine... I don't loooove mine.
  • Approach shoes: La Sportiva TX2 Evo is 25% off. I was hesitant about these before I bought them but I actually really love them now. it's lightweight and comfy and perfect for scrambling up rocks. If you're planning any class 3-5 hikes this summer, approach shoes will serve you well.
  • Climbing harness: Black Diamond Momentum Harness is 25% off. I have this one and it's a decent beginner-friendly one if you don't want to drop a ton for a lightweight, smaller alpine harness. This one's good for climbing crags and the climbing gym.
  • Ski Tour Backpack: Pingora Vivid 27L is 25% off! This is my go-to ski tour backpack and it's so thoughtfully designed. Great pack for Spring skiing.

Ok, I know that was a lot. And I'm still missing a lot of good gear that's on sale but those are the ones that jumped to mind that you have to check out.

If you have any questions on gear, feel free to reply to this email and ask me! A lot of my favorite gear is not on sale but if you're looking for something to apply that discount code for... I got you 😉

Hey Reader! Fall is here, and the first hints of color are showing in the high country. Colorado’s peak hasn’t hit yet, but it’s expected earlier than usual this year—so now’s the time to start watching your favorite spots and planning your leaf-peeping road trip. 🍁 Colorado: The northern part of the state turns first, and a few trees in Rocky Mountain National Park are already changing. Peak is still a ways off, but lower elevations will follow in the next couple of weeks. Here's your...

Hey Reader! If you haven't noticed by now, I'm a sucker for a turquoise lake hike—but it's even better when it's surrounded by colorful mountains. That’s exactly what you get at Lake Chihuahua, an underrated yet stunning alpine lake tucked away in Colorado’s high country, less than 2 hours from Denver. I didn’t include it in my “Best Turquoise Lakes” previous roundup—not because it didn’t earn a spot, but because it amazed me so much that I felt deserved its own feature. This trail has: ✅...
